About Solar Panel Installation Accreditations

Trusted Solar Panel Installation Accreditations

Understanding Solar Accreditations: MCS & RECC Explained

Solar PV panels and certified installers in the UK must meet certain standards for quality and safety. There are two main accreditations that exist to ensure this. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) ensures that installers are certified, panels meet quality standards, and solar panel installations are safe. The Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) protects consumers and promotes ethical selling practices.

Understanding Solar Accreditations: MCS & RECC Explained

These accreditations are typically required to qualify for government incentives and inspections, and serve as a mark of assurance that the installation has been done by a certified professional and that the panels meet UK quality standards. Overall, these accreditations help instil trust and confidence in the solar PV industry in the UK. As a company we have strived to qualify for additional certifications and insurance schemes to ensure your consumer confidence.

Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC)

To ensure you have a good experience, you must know what to look out for. Of course most consumers are not technical experts, and nor do you need to be. But you do need accurate information and enough time to understand what it is you are buying. You must be clear about what your expectations are, and you should know the extent to which the generator(s) you are considering are capable of meeting them. In particular you should be clear about the typical price range and likely performance of the generator, and what this is likely to deliver for you in financial terms. Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)

MCS is a standards organisation. We create and maintain standards that allows for the certification of products, installers and their installations. Associated with these standards is the certification scheme, run on behalf of MCS by Certification Bodies who hold UKAS accreditation to ISO 17065. MCS certifies low-carbon products and installations used to produce electricity and heat from renewable sources. MCS is a mark of quality. Membership of MCS demonstrates adherence to these recognised industry standards; highlighting quality, competency and compliance.

Trustmark Registered

TrustMark is an independent, Government-backed standards scheme developed across the home improvement industry. Homeowners who contract with a TrustMark-registered business can be reassured that the business complies not only with RECC’s rigorous standards, but also with TrustMark’ scheme requirements, including the TrustMark Code of Conduct and Customer Charter. This will provide reassurance, confidence and peace of mind to consumers.

The G98 and G99 Solar Application Processes in the UK

Understanding the Difference Between G98 and G99

If you're considering installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) system in the UK, it's essential to understand the G98 and G99 application processes. These processes, regulated by Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), ensure the safe and efficient integration of solar systems into the electricity grid. Here’s a breakdown of their key differences and when each applies.

What is a G98 Application?

The G98 process (formerly G83) is designed for small-scale, microgeneration installations. This includes systems with a capacity of 16 amps per phase or less, typically up to 3.68kW for single-phase or 11.04kW for three-phase connections.

G98 installations are considered "fit and inform," meaning you can connect your system to the grid without prior DNO approval, provided you inform them within 28 days of commissioning. This streamlined process is ideal for residential systems and small-scale setups, making it quicker and less administratively demanding.

What is a G99 Application?

For larger installations exceeding the G98 thresholds, the G99 process (formerly G59) applies. This covers solar systems above 3.68kW single-phase or 11.04kW three-phase, including commercial and large-scale projects.

Unlike G98, G99 requires a more detailed application process, including technical assessments, network studies, and DNO approval before installation. The system must meet stricter compliance standards to ensure the local network can handle the additional load. This process may take several weeks or months, depending on complexity.

Key Differences

Scale: G98 is for small systems; G99 is for larger setups.
Approval: G98 doesn’t need pre-approval; G99 does.
Timeline: G99 is longer due to network impact assessments.
Understanding these distinctions helps ensure your solar project complies with regulations and integrates seamlessly with the grid. Always consult your DNO early in the planning process to confirm the appropriate application pathway.
